Endgame and aftermath
After numerous defeats and thousands of casualties the Japanese retreated out of Guadalcanal much to the dismay of Emperor Hirohito who had previously marked Guadalcanal as the number one priority. The evacuation took place February 1-7. The Americans took complete control on the ninth of February 1943. The Island now has a population of 60,300 of mostly Melanesian.
